Archery - An old pastime & life style
We all know the story of Robin Hood splitting arrows, medieval competitions & many battles but archery was not only an essential part of medieval life, it was also a pastime.

Practicing at "the Butts" (Butts - a straw target) was a regular activity every Sunday morning, which later during Henry VIII's reign became law.

Many of the terms we use today originate from the medieval times like:

"Another string to your bow"

"Keep it under your hat" - to keep a spare string dry they would put it under their hats

"A bolt from the blue" - a bolt is the arrow from the crossbow which came from the skyes being the blue.

Archery was and still is in some countries used to hunt for food
(not in the UK though!) It is also seen as an art form (Japanese archery)
