Evening one and all,

So you think RS Archery only do archery related birthday parties no we also do a party called “knights parties”

So what’s a Knights Birthday Party you ask?

In basic terms it’s THE birthday party that will make your budding knight’s birthday party a party to remember.

It’s all about the life and times of a medieval knight (men at arms) so we have some great medieval party activities for them to partake in

Quintain – Medieval jousting practice along the tilt a must for any knight
Dressing of the Knight Game – soon finds out the squires in them (or not in some cases)
Our excellent talk about all things Knighty!
Sword fighting – Against sack or controlled moves with us (never against each other!) with wooden swords called wasters.
Spear training – Learn the moves & control the spear against an advancing army (the other team or a hanging sack)
Kingy – A real medieval game played by knights for speed & balance – 1 player has a shield while the other throw soft balls (although in medieval times it would have been stones!) at the feet. If the stone (ball) hits you – you’re out!
Score points – All activities will be marked (with a points flag) – which team will be victorious!!!
Hand on session – handle the armour and weapons (all blunted)

Our medieval knight party lasts 1.5 hrs which quite often flies by (no dragons – honest!) but within that time it’s a non stop medieval fun!

Oh and don’t forget that you trainee knights will need some swords, shields, dirks etc… so take a look at our great medieval toys (http://www.rsarchery.co.uk/eshop)

So make your budding knights birthday party and contact us soon.

Hi All,

Well where can we start with this blog called “The last 5 days at RS Archery”?

Ok I reckon that it’s been a very exciting week so far, what with the phone going non stop with archery birthday party enquiries, e mails buzzing with interested new archery club members and then my mobile dinging every couple of minutes with new twitter mentions (bless the “archery/tea twitter gang – lol).

From an e mail on Monday we’ve had a young girl popped down to RS Archery Club (Welwyn Garden City) this week for her first archery beginner session, which went very well and she really enjoyed the first archery session.
We always like to get prospectus new archery club members down asap.

Tuesday well was a extremely good day especially regarding the RS Archery web site, I still can’t believe it but our page hits went from a modest 300 avg a day to a huge (for us anyway) 3500 hits in one day!!!!
The only thing I can think has help this is some recent contact and dealings with the good folks at Gold Challenge (http://www.goldchallenge.org). If you don’t know who/what gold challenge is then have a look, then if you fancy having a go at archery the give me a shout!

Wednesday evening was a busy evening revitalising an old second hand set of alu arrows ready for one of our archery club members and exercising on the cross trainer (good for core strength for archery + when I go into our medieval battles)

Thursday – RS Archery Club night (http://www.rsarchery.co.uk/rs-archery-club-wgc-herts) – always a good day/night with a great bunch of friendly archers at the club. I even managed to have a ping of the old bent stick myself – haven’t lost it !!!!

Finally Friday – dam cold but that doesn’t stop us! Plenty of tea to keep the hands warm. I must admit but I’m glad we’ve got to Friday and it’s been a rather relaxed day replying to e mails & the odd tweet.

Now preparing for tomorrows medieval archery birthday party in Watford – have to print of a personalised medieval scroll for a budding Robin Hood called James (http://www.rsarchery.co.uk/medieval-archery-7-11-years)

Ok so this is the start of a more regular blog I hope so any advice, comments or suggestions on what you’d like to read would be gratefully received.

Right got to start rolling them scrolls of the press (printer)…….. Have a good weekend folks and do’t forget you can link up with us via Twitter, Facebook and Google+

Its very important to keep interested in the activity or sport that you take part in. Now archery is a bit of a stationary sport and just shooting arrows after arrows at the same archery target at the archery range can get boring especially for junior archery club members.

So at RS Archery Club archery range we try to keep everyone interested in the sport by not only shooting the normal target archery, but also organising archery games, archery competitions & fun archery events throughout the year.

The archery club in welwyn garden city is open to all ages 8 year old plus and you’ll find on the archery range that we shoot various types of archery equipment – basic recurves, intermediate level recurves & even the longbow. Unfortunately the only archery equipment we don’t use are compound & crossbow.

The club has a growing longbow element in the archery club from juniors right up to the “young at heart” archery club members

Never tried archery before then why not enrol on one of our regular archery classes

So give Archery in Hertfordshire with RS Archery & RS Archery Club

What with the Olympics just around the corner we should all be working on our ideas to promote sport not just in our local area but for the whole of the UK.

Sport in schools funds have been greatly reduced due to cut backs but we must keep going.

In 2012 London and the UK will be hosting the largest sports event in the world – London Olympics 2012.

At RS Archery & RS Archery club we aim (pun intended) to bring archery to the masses both locally with our archery club in Welwyn Garden City, Herts and we our mobile archery unit (RS Archery) in school event, business events and corporate days etc…

Archery is a great sport that all can try, enjoy and even master. Even you could have a secret Olympian deep down inside.
Taking about inside did you know that we can set up our archery events both outside in the wonderful summer we hopefully will have during the London Olympics 2012, but should the weather be typically English and rains we can also set up the archery indoors.

So give Archery a go with RS Archery & RS Archery Club

Birthday’s come round every year and every year your sons or daugthers birthday party must be the talk of the school – wow we had this party, we did this at our birthday party etc….

So where do you start when planing your child’s birthday party?

1) A date for the birthday party is the first job bearing in mind that most party entertainers only run parties during the weekend plus I’m sure the mum & dad would love to see the smile on there child’s face at that special birthday party you’ve planned!

2) Venue – are you going to do this at your house, do you have a big enough garden or should you be thinking about hiring a venue?

3) Time of year for the birthday party – during the summer months kids parties are great outdoors in a large enough garden but living in the UK we get more rain than sun shine! If the childs birthday is during October – March then I would suggest finding an indoor venue without a doubt.

4) Cost! oh yes someone has to pay for this great birthday party you are planning and unfortunately it’s going to be you. There are lots of different types of parties to choose from like a basic bouncy castle to a themed party (medieval archery or knights party – now who does them I wonder!) Set yourself a budget and get looking.

Archery for beginners – Equipment 2

So you’ve found an archery club, completed the beginner course, joined and now you have thought about buying your first bow. On my archery for beginner’s equipment blog we have briefly talked about the bow, sight, arrows, tab, bracer & bow bag or case.
It’s probably cost you around £150 so far but while you are at the shop of wonders (the archery shop or their web site) you may wish to think about picking up the following

1) A quiver – this holds your arrows. You can of course use the clubs arrow pots if they have them. The quiver is a great little bit of equipment not only to carry your arrows but usually they have pockets which are perfect to hold your tab, a score pad, pen/pencil and maybe the odd spares item. Basic quivers start around £10 A good quiver is around £30-£40.
Note back quivers may make you look like Robin Hood but are not really practical in the real world. Stick to a side quiver.2) Next thing on your archery list should be a bow stand. Since you have just invested over £100 in your first archery bow don’t you want to look after it? Bow stands are simple – approx £15.00 and come in a few colours!

3) When you buy your first archery bow it should come with a basic plastic arrow rest. These are great to start you of. Don’t get tempted by all the different types of arrow rests you can get. A basic £2.00 arrow rest can last for years and will give you confidence as they are hooked to hold the arrow on.4) Now I bet you are now thinking I need a spare string in case mine snaps – we’ll I can tell you I’ve never had one snap on me! As long as you keep the string in good condition then it will service you for years.

I think that’s enough to keep you going for now and hopefully has helped you on your way.

Coming soon will be a blog on intermediate archery equipment

Archery for beginners – Equipment

When you are starting out in your archery “career” all the other club members equipment has a wow factor to it be it the bow itself, arrows, a long rod or that micro adjustment carbon sight.

I always mention to new archery club beginners never to rush out and get equipment within the first 6 months, learn the correct shooting technique & enjoy our wonderful sport.

So what should you buy as you’re first archery set up?Well this greatly depends on your budget – basic wooden take down bow – like the ones you are using at most good archery clubs are around £60 which is great for a young ones first bow or someone on a tight budget.

Arrows can also great depend on money – simple Aluminum arrows start around £4 each – you’ll need at least 6 plus some sparesNext a must is a basic arm bracer & a tab both coming in at around £4 – £9
These are down to personal taste and feel although on the bracer side I would personally steer clear of Velcro strapped bracers as after a while the Velcro can get furry and clogged up.

On the tab front a two layer leather tab is great to start. Now that you have purchased a bow, arrows, bracer & tab the next thing on the shopping list is the sight.

The sight can come in many guises from the basic short extended beginner sight – around £10 right up to the carbon micro adjustment 14″ extended sights coming in around over £100.

All of this lovely new equipment doesn’t look good in a plastic carrier bag so make sure you have set a side about £30 for an equipment bag, most have two pouches, one for the handle, one for the limbs. Some also have additional pockets to carry the small bits like your bracer, tab etc…

One thing to bear in mind when buying a bag thing about will my arrows also fit into them or do I need an arrows pot.

This isn’t everything you’ll have on your first bow set up shopping list but is something to set you going…..archery for beginners equipment 2 – coming soon

A few top archery tips for beginners

1) Stand up tall and straight when shooting. By doing this your stance should be better, thus lining up all the bones and muscles correctly – remember archery shouldn’t be hard.

2) Look after your archery equipment – Keep the bow string waxed and in good condition. Screws for archery sights, rods etc… Should be tight – last thing you want is for the sight to fall off when you’ve nearly achieved your personal best. Check the condition of your arrows – fletches are in good condition, the arrow is straight & the pile is blunted. 3) Relax your bow arm (the one holding the archery bow). Any tension in the bow am will be transmitted to the bow on release. The elbow should be slightly bend which ensures your fore arm stays out of the way of the archery string & promotes a relaxed bow arm

4) Anchor point – Should be under the chin with the archery bow string touching either the nose/mouth or the side of the mouth. Inde finger should be touching the jaw bone. Thumb should be relaxed and kept out of the way.

5) In archery safety is paramount – listen to your archery instructor/ archery coach. Most archery clubs will use a call or whistle system for archery club members to start shooting and going to collect. You should also know the word that stops all archers shooting in an emergency – this word is “FAST”
